Understanding Internet Technology

What is internet technology, how this technology works, and how the internet is accessed for using the different services it provides for the users?

Before we start deep diving, let's discuss what is the term internet!

What does the term internet stand for?

The term internet is the combination of two terms “inter” and “net”.

Inter means between, among, or within some things (two or more than two) and

Net is derived from the word, Network' (a computer network).

So, the internet means you are inside many networks connected with each other.

The process of connecting different and separate networks together is called internetworking.

Hence! the full meaning of the internet is being between, among, or within many networks that are joined and connected with each other globally.

Internet is a Global Communication System

The process of internetworking links thousands and millions of computer devices and their users together across the globe.

Whether users are on any network, they can communicate and exchange data & information with each other (of course with some permissions called the network protocols). This global communication system collectively is called the internet.

Internet is the Network of Networks

Internet is the Network of Networks
Internet means a network of many networks joined together worldwide

In short definition "the internet is a collection of many networks that are joined together" and in more simple words you can say that, “the internet is the network of networks".

How the Internet Works?

It acts as a carrier of Data

At its heart, the internet uses high-speed data lines for carrying and transferring the data from one network to another network located anywhere in the world.

These high-speed data lines are called the backbones of the internet. These carry huge volumes of data traffic and make this traffic reach their destination on networks.

Many Regional and local networks are connected to these backbones through Internet Service Providers.

Internet applications and network protocols enable the users to communicate and exchange data & information with the other users on any network on the internet and the internet act as a carrier of data between the networks.

When people are connected to the internet they can communicate and share data and information and use several different services of the internet.

Accessing the internet

three essentials for using the internet services
three essentials for using internet services

For accessing and using the internet services you need three things.
  • A computer device ( a mobile, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer)
  • An internet application software installed on your device
  • An internet connection

Internet Application Software

You must have the right type of internet application software installed on your computer device for using any specific service of the internet.

For Example:

For searching and browsing the internet, you need an internet application software called “the browser”. Without a browser application, you can't search or browse the internet.

Some application programs also enable you to use multiple Internet services so that you may not need separate applications for different services.

The most commonly used internet services are electronic mail, world wide web, file transfer protocol, live audio-video chat, and Instant messaging.

Internet Connection

The compulsory thing, after having a computer device with suitable applications installed over it, is getting that device connected to the internet.

Internet connection is obtained through an Internet Service Provider or ISP in short ( a company that connects the local and regional networks to the Internet backbones).

ISPs may provide a specific type or many different types of internet connections to their users.

Users can set up an account with the ISP or may connect to the internet by connecting some other private network (a school, office, or business network) or a public network (mostly available at public places) that is already connected to the internet.
