What is the internet used for and what are the major services of the internet

The internet is used for its several different services people do interactions & communications, marketing & business, download & upload files and also exchange data and information with each other on the internet and to do this a user needs a computer device with a specific type of software applications installed on it and obviously an internet connection provided by the internet service provider or ISP. By having all these essentials of the internet, a user can access the internet and use its thousand of services.

Communicating through the Internet

The Internet is open to anyone who can access it. You are free not only to use the resources provided by others but to create resources of your own on the internet. Millions of people publish their documents on the World Wide Web, exchange email messages, and perform many other tasks online. Internet services, though lesser-known, provide users with many unique and interesting ways to communicate and share data and information with each other.

Main internet Services

The most common examples of internet services are electronic mail, world wide web (WWW), file transfer protocol (FTP), instant chat & messaging, and newsgroups or forums.

 E-mail

E-mail is now a more common means of communication than telephone calls. Electronic mail, or e-mail, is a system for exchanging messages through a computer network. People most commonly use e-mail to send and receive text messages, but depending on the software you use, you may be able to exchange audio or video messages with others. E-mail was one of the first uses of the Internet and quickly became a popular feature because it lets users exchange messages from anywhere in the world. Further, e-mail is less expensive because there is no charge for using it, beyond the regular fees you pay to your ISP. E-mail is also a faster way to communicate than postal mail because e-mail messages typically reach their destination in seconds rather than days. E-mail services are very easy to access, and this is another reason for e-mail's popularity. You can use this internet service through a typical ISP account or can also use a Web-based e-mail service, which lets you check your messages wherever you have Web access. Some e-mail systems can even interact with any telephone and actually “read’’ your messages to you. Another advantage of e-mail is the ability to attach data files and program files with it. E-mail, however, is not a real-time communications system. This means that once you send a message to someone, you must wait until the other reads it and sends you a reply. This delay, however, doesn’t stop people from exchanging billions of messages through email each year.

World wide web

The World Wide Web (WWW), commonly known as the Web is another main internet service used to get information and knowledge and even to perform online business and payments. By having the possibility of interactive applications, streaming multimedia content, and e-commerce on the Internet, the web with its great graphics-rich pages, has changed the true impression of the Internet’s original purpose that was, to serve as a means of communication. Now the web is much more than a digital library on the internet.

FTP (file transfer protocol)

The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used for transmitting files between computers on the internet. With the help of FTP, websites provide access to many different types of files and a user can download files of all kinds. Many computer hardware and software companies frequently host their own FTP sites, where you can copy program updates, bug solutions, and other types of software.

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and Web-Based Chat

Internet relay chat (IRC), or just chat, is a popular way for Internet users to communicate in real-time with other users. Real-time communication means communicating with other users in the immediate present. Unlike e-mail, chat does not require a waiting period between the time you send a message and the time the other person or group of people receives the message.

Newsgroups & Forums

In addition to the messages distributed to mailing lists by e-mail, the internet also supports a form of a public bulletin board called newsgroups. There are tens of thousands of active Internet newsgroups, each devoted to discussion of a particular topic. Many of the most widely distributed newsgroups are part of a system called Usenet, but others are targeted to a particular region or-to users connected to a specific network or institution, such as a university or a large corporation. Newsgroups are technically distinct from, but functionally similar to, discussion forums on the World Wide Web. Newsreader software is used to read the content of newsgroups. Before the adoption of the World Wide Web, Usenet newsgroups were among the most popular Internet services. In recent years, this form of open discussion on the Internet has lost considerable ground to individually operated browser-accessible forums and big social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter.
